40+years of cats

Meet the author

Hi, I’m Frank.

Forty years of cats. Most of the mistakes in these books, I made first.

I was twenty-four the first time I bought cat food for a cat of my own. I’m an engineer by training, so of course I’d made a list. Then I stood in front of forty feet of bags and cans, and I bought the one with the nicest picture on the front.

I’m a retired engineer, and I’ve been taking in cats for more than forty years: the kittens, the ferals, the old-timers, and the ones nobody else wanted. These two books put in order what all of them taught me.

  • Not a vet, and I’ll be the first to tell you so. Every health fact in both books was checked against veterinary guidelines and published studies.
  • Plain steps you can start today, and a clear line for when it’s time to call the vet.
  • On YouTube, I help cat owners understand and care for their cats.

Dottie, Pepper and young Biscuit kept me company while I wrote, mostly by sitting on my notes.

Kind words

What cat owners are saying

★★★★★
“What I liked most was the explanation of when a cat has had enough petting. It’s such an everyday situation, and yet I’d never really understood which signs to watch for. It’s explained very simply.”
Karen
★★★★★
“I thought the body language part would just be about meows and tail movements. I was surprised by the details on the ears, eyes and posture. It’s one of those books you want to read with your cat right next to you.”
Robert
★★★★★
“The section on winning a shy cat’s trust was my favorite. I liked the approach of giving them space and letting them make the first move. Everything is explained patiently, without making you feel you’ve done it all wrong.”
Linda
★★★★★
“I don’t usually read manuals cover to cover, so I appreciated being able to look up a specific behavior and go straight to that lesson. The explanations about the little nips during petting and play were especially clear.”
Susan
★★★★★
“My favorite part was the one on food labels. With so many nice-sounding words on the bags, it’s hard to know what you’re comparing. I liked finding an explanation I could follow without having to look up every term.”
David
★★★★★
“I really appreciated that it talked about budget. I want to take good care of my cats, but I can’t buy every accessory I see. The section on what’s essential and what’s optional was the first thing I marked to read again.”
Patricia
★★★★★
“I bought the book mainly for the feeding part, but the section on older cats really caught my interest. They’re everyday details you can easily overlook. I liked that it also covers how to organize a care routine.”
Nancy
★★★★★
“The sheets for tracking expenses and comparing food costs were a nice extra. I write everything down, so I appreciate having a ready-made structure. The book has a practical approach that really suits me.”
Michael
★★★★★
“I wondered if the two books would be too similar. One focuses on understanding your cat and the other on organizing their care, so I found different reasons to turn to each one. I liked that combination.”
Barbara
★★★★★
“What I value most about both is the tone. The explanations feel friendly, and you can look up the topic you need without rereading everything. I also appreciated that they point out when a question should go to the vet.”

Is Frank a vet?

No, and he’ll be the first to tell you so. Frank is a retired engineer who has taken in cats for more than forty years. Every health fact in both books was checked against veterinary guidelines and published studies, and each book tells you clearly when it’s time to call your vet. These books don’t replace your vet’s advice.

Which book should I start with?

If your question is about behavior, like biting, hiding, scratching or what a meow means, start with Decoding Your Cat’s Secret Language. If it’s about food, supplies, costs or vet visits, start with Smart Cat Care. Most people find they need both, which is why the pack costs just $10 more than Smart Cat Care alone.

Do they cover kittens, older cats and homes with more than one cat?

Yes. Smart Cat Care has chapters on getting ready for a new kitten or adopted cat, keeping an adult cat active, making life easier for an older cat, and mealtimes with several cats. Decoding has lessons on teaching a kitten that hands aren’t toys, winning over a shy or rescued cat, and a full part on living with more than one cat.

No. You pay once and the books are yours to keep. There are no monthly fees, and you get lifetime access to every updated edition at no extra cost.

What if they’re not for me?
